A Bit of History: The 1964 Lincoln Continental Convertible

While new LINCOLN models like the LINCOLN MKZ and the LINCOLN MKX are modern examples of stylish luxury, there is nothing quite like a classic luxury car. The car in question here is a Classic LINCOLN Continental, a 1964 convertible that boasted a sleek design and impressive options.

The Continental got a complete redesign in 1961, the details of which were carried into the 1964 model. It was a full 15-inches shorter than the Continental from 1960, and 300-lbs lighter. According to ads at the time, the restyled convertible was "specifically designed for today's close-packed traffic...slimmer, easier to park and handle."1

Under the hood of what critics called "a strikingly beautiful car,"2 was a 430-cubic-inch V8, and by 1963, it pumped out about 320 hp. Standard amenities in '64 Continentals were automatic transmission, radio, power seats, windows, steering and brakes. Available options included air conditioning for an additional $500; speed control, $97; AM-FM pushbutton radio, $85; and power trunk release for $53. Starting price of a 1964 LINCOLN Continental Convertible was just under $7,000 - about $52,000 in today's market.

Lucky for you, modern-day LINCOLN models come standard with AC, power seats and telescoping steering wheels, among many other things. Stop in and see the entire selection at one of the Sentry Auto Group showrooms in Medford, Dorchester or Shrewsbury. We promise you'll find today's lineup of LINCOLN vehicles just as alluring as the classic convertibles of the '60s.
