Ford Aims to Reduce Water Consumption in a Big Way

You probably know all about the fuel-efficient new cars available from Ford like the 2012 Ford Focus. There's no doubt that with more models like these hitting the streets, Ford is helping us save one of our most precious resources (fossil fuel), while also keeping our environment cleaner and healthier for generations to come. Except, fuel isn't the only resource they're looking to conserve, and this next bit may surprise you: Ford is working to reduce the amount of water it takes to produce a vehicle by 30 percent.
We don't just bathe in and drink water, major automakers use thousands of gallons of water to make each of their cars - as much as 40,000 gallons/vehicle. We were surprised to hear that number too, but relieved to hear that Ford has reduced their water consumption by 49 percent since the year 2000 - saving an unbelievable 10.5-billion gallons of water. And they've set a new goal for themselves: reducing consumption by another 30 percent by 2015.
How? Well the water used in auto manufacturing is mainly used in lubricating machining equipment. Ford has engineered what they're calling "dry-machining" at several of their engine plants, which sprays atomized oil directly on the machines, saving as much as 280,000 gallons of water each year. They've also implemented biological membrane reactors and waste water treatment systems that recycle up to 65 percent of the waste water produced during manufacturing.
This is
most definitely an initiative that Sentry Auto Group can
stand behind. As it is, the water they've saved in the last ten years is the
same amount of water that flows over the Niagara Falls in just under four
hours, equals more than 260 million loads of laundry, and would fill 125
Supertankers. And, we know that Boston area residents are committed to
sustainable habits like recycling and taking public transportation, and more drivers are stopping in to see us to invest in more fuel-efficient vehicles. Trading your old car in for a model that uses even a few gallons less per mile can certainly add up, don't you think?
